AODA isn’t a style guideline — it’s Ontario law. The intent is straightforward: someone using a wheelchair, a walker, a stroller, or simply carrying something heavy should be able to get through your front door without needing help or without fighting the door itself.

  • Clear opening width — wide enough for a wheelchair or mobility scooter to pass through without turning sideways, typically in the range of 850mm (roughly 33–34″) of clear width once the door is fully open.
  • Closing speed and hold-open time — the door needs to stay open long enough for someone moving slowly to clear the opening before it begins to close.
  • Sensor coverage — activation and safety sensors need to detect a person across the full width of the opening, including someone shorter than sensor-mounting height was originally designed for (wheelchair users, children).
  • Signage — automatic doors need to be visually identifiable as automatic, with contrasting markings or decals placed at both standing and seated eye level, so nobody has to guess whether to push, pull, or just wait.
