“Steel door” and “hollow metal door” get used interchangeably on almost every quote request we get — and most of the time that’s fine, because they usually are the same thing. But not always, and the difference matters more than the name suggests: gauge, core fill, and fire rating decide whether a door holds up to daily commercial traffic or ends up back on our schedule within a year. Here’s how to actually tell them apart and spec the right one for your GTA building.

1. Are Steel Doors and Hollow Metal Doors the Same Thing?
Almost always, yes. “Hollow metal” is the industry term for a door built from cold-rolled or galvanized steel face sheets wrapped around a hollow, reinforced core — so a hollow metal door is, by definition, a steel door. “Steel door” is just the everyday name people use for the same product. The one place they genuinely diverge: some heavy-duty, high-security steel doors are built solid rather than hollow-core, for detention-adjacent, high-abuse, or extreme-security openings. So every hollow metal door is a steel door, but not every heavy steel door is technically “hollow metal.”
2. Gauge: The Number That Actually Matters
Gauge is the steel thickness, and it works backwards from what you’d expect — the lower the number, the thicker and heavier the steel. Most commercial entrances in the GTA use 16 or 18 gauge doors; lighter-duty interior or light-commercial openings sometimes use 20 gauge. The higher the daily traffic and the more abuse an opening takes — loading docks, stairwells, back-of-house corridors — the more it pays to spec a lower gauge number, not a higher one.

- Mineral wool or vermiculite core — required for fire-rated door assemblies; this is what lets a hollow metal door carry a 20, 45, 60, or 90-minute fire rating.
- Steel-stiffened core — vertical steel ribs inside the door for openings that need extra rigidity and resistance to forced entry.

4. Fire Rating: Why Hollow Metal Is the Default for Rated Openings
Hollow metal is the standard substrate for fire-rated commercial openings, and for good reason — the steel face sheets and mineral-fill core are what let the assembly hold a listed rating in the first place. A fire door is only rated as a complete assembly, though: the door, the frame, and the hardware all have to carry matching labels for the rating to count. Swap in the wrong closer or a non-rated frame on a rated door, and the assembly no longer meets its listing under the Ontario Building Code’s fire separation requirements, even though the door itself is fine. On accessible entrances, the same door also has to clear AODA opening-force and clearance requirements — fire rating and accessibility are separate checks, not one covering the other.

A warehouse or distribution centre door depends on traffic volume — high-cycle loading dock doors often justify the heavier gauge. High-security openings — server rooms, cash-handling areas, or exterior doors in higher-risk locations — are where heavy-gauge or security-rated steel earns its higher cost. The right call depends on the specific opening, not a blanket rule.
Gauge and hinge hardware need to be matched too — a heavy door hung on standard-duty hinges is one of the more common reasons a commercial door starts sagging within the first year or two.
